SUCCESS...FOR KINSHIP FAMILIES!
PLEASE call today before 4:00 PM to help get the SB 217 out of the House Education Subcommitte on Teachers and Administrative Action. If the bill does not come out of this committee it is almost certainly a dead bill this session.
SB 217 is critical to helping all kinship families in Virginia who have helped prevent children from coming into foster care. SB 217 will mandate that local school districts allow kinship families caring for relative's children on a full-time basis (24/7/365) to enroll the children in their local public school without requiring a custody order.
Even if you aren't a kinship caregiver, we are certain that if your family ever needed your help you would be there. You would want to be able to register the children for school with as little disruption to the family unit as possible. So please help NOW, even if you will not currently benefit from the legislation., because...you never know what can happen.
Your voice, your emails, your visits, and your letters DO make a difference.
Please contact the following Delegates, immediately, if they represent you. If they don't represent you and you know someone in their district, please ask them to make a call or send an email, immediately. Here is a sample message:
"Help grandparents and other relatives preserve their family relationships by passing SB 217, so that there is a process for families to use for school enrollment which does not require a court order."
